The most common adverse reaction reported by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) was nausea. The most common adverse reaction reported by the MHRA was a rash, with up to 80% of the patients reporting an episode. This is the second-most common adverse reaction reported by the MHRA and the first in England in the last five years, behind all other reported adverse reactions to the drug, and it is particularly important for patients with cardiovascular disease and/or cerebrovascular disease (CVD). The most commonly reported adverse reactions were headache, flu-like, asthenia, somnolence, nausea, dry mouth, sore throat, diarrhoea, and flatulence.
Background
In clinical practice, adverse reactions to Viagra are frequently reported during the post-marketing phase of treatment. Viagra can cause mild to severe side-effects, including a headache and flu-like symptoms, which are not usually reported by the majority of patients. In the UK, reports of severe adverse reactions associated with Viagra have been reported for patients receiving anti-depressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), lithium and triptans, but these are generally reported on-label (see Table 1).
Table 1
Other adverse reactions reported by the MHRA in the last five years
In the UK, reported adverse reactions to Viagra were not significantly different from those reported by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as reported by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). In March 2006, NICE reported adverse reactions reported by the MHRA as being lower in frequency than the NICE reporting frequencies reported in the UK. The NICE adverse reaction reporting frequencies have been shown to be similar to those reported in the NICE reporting data. This is in keeping with the reporting of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) adverse reactions reporting data for the past five years. However, the EMA is not currently registered and there has been no information from the UK on how many reported adverse reactions were recorded. It is estimated that more than 300,000 patients will have reported adverse reactions to the UK Viagra product (see Table 2).
Table 2
Percentage of reported adverse reactions reported by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the last five years
The most common adverse reactions reported by the MHRA were headache, flu-like, asthenia, somnolence, dry mouth, diarrhoea, and flatulence. The most commonly reported adverse reactions were headache, somnolence, dry mouth, dizziness, and flatulence.
In the UK, reports of adverse reactions reported by the MHRA were as follows:
There was a small increase in the reporting rate of nausea with the use of Viagra, but this was due to the reporting rate of the adverse reactions being higher in the majority of patients in the group receiving the most benefit. There were no deaths reported by the UK's MHRA during the study period, but there were a few reports of other reported adverse reactions.
The adverse reactions reported by the MHRA in the last five years have been shown to be similar to those reported in the NICE reporting data.

“Viagra is a very safe drug,” said a woman who is taking it for erectile dysfunction. “You don’t need a prescription for it, but you also don’t need a prescription to get it.”
It has been one of the most talked-about medications for women, but experts are unsure whether Viagra can actually help improve sexual health. The drug has been linked to a number of adverse effects, including erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and low blood pressure.
“You can take it with some alcohol,” said a woman, who asked to not be identified for fear of sharing her story. “But if you’re not in a relationship or if you’re taking it without a prescription, you can still take it.”
While it can be a good idea for men to have a discussion with their doctor about Viagra, experts also believe it is safe for women to use it.
“You can take it with a glass of water,” said a woman who is taking Viagra. “It’s not a bad idea to take it with a glass of water.”
There are some benefits to taking the drug. In addition to improving sexual health, Viagra can also help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke, and may also have some other benefits. For instance, women who take it with alcohol or fatty foods may have a higher chance of having a heart attack.
“Viagra can be taken without a prescription,” said a woman who is taking Viagra. “There are also some risks.”
Dr. Susan Taylor, a urologist with the New York University Langone Medical Center, said that while it can be a good idea to discuss your options with your doctor, it is essential to understand the risks involved.
“There are some risks and they are not as important as the benefits,” she said. “The main issue is that they’re not as important as the benefits.”
